MTN Nigeria expands service revenue as data usage improves.

Management highlighted resilient subscriber engagement and continued network investments across high-growth regions.

MTN Nigeria reported broad-based growth in service revenue for the first quarter, with management pointing to sustained data consumption and a stable subscriber base as the primary drivers of the result.

Data revenue remains the clearest growth engine. Average usage per active subscriber continued to climb through the quarter as smartphone penetration deepened outside the Lagos and Abuja corridors, and the operator's fibre and 4G rollouts extended coverage into secondary cities.

Management reaffirmed its network investment programme for the year, arguing that capacity added now underpins pricing power later. Executives were careful to frame the spend as demand-led rather than defensive, noting that congestion on high-traffic sites had been the binding constraint on usage in several regions.

The voice business remains under structural pressure as subscribers substitute toward over-the-top messaging and calling. That mix shift is not new, and the company has guided investors to expect data and fintech to carry incremental growth from here.

For investors, the question is whether network capex converts into margin. MTN's operating leverage is real but it is not automatic — it depends on tariff stability and on the naira behaving. Both remain outside management's control.
